5 Lessons the Church can Learn from Facebook (Lesson #2)

Share |

If you look at the Facebook “F” it looks like a Christian cross with the top bent over. This got me thinking about how FB out churches the church in several things and thought we could learn from them.

Facebook Lesson #1: It is all about the life of the participants and not the CEO.

Facebook Lesson #2: Facebook culture is very open to ‘friending’ new people into their Facebook community.

Facebook has a very open ‘friending’ culture. I cannot tell you how many new and interesting people I have encountered because of this culture. In fact it is hard for me to comprehend my social life before FB.

What the church can learn from this:

The Church needs to learn how to develop a ‘friending’ culture from FB, not a friending culture to convert someone as soon as possible, but a real true ‘friending’ of someone because they have an important story and we could enrich one other’s lives.

Tangible expression of Facebook Lesson #2:

I think a 'friending' culture may be tough to go large scale quickly because the Church has a track record of only caring about “saving souls” and not so much about creating eternal friendships. So, I think starting with small things like being involved with what other organizations are doing and supporting their events may be a good start at creating a ‘friending’ culture in the Church.

Lesson #3 will post January 6th, 2012
